The Solar-Heated Adaptahaus is the UK’s First Affordable Green Prefab
Home "For some people ""prefab"" may sound more utilitarian than luxury,
but the first completed Adaptahaus in West Cumbria is a posh,
attractive shelter that can change that perception - even though it's
totally affordable! Designed by Alan Dawson Associates, these low carbon
prefab Adaptahauses are assembled offsite in a factory in order to cut
down on costs and construction waste, and to ensure the highest build
quality.
Almost all of the materials used, including steel and timber, are either recycled or sourced locally, and solar and wind energy can be incorporated into the design. And because the Adaptahaus has no inner walls, it is a very flexible home that will last much longer than a standard prefab might. Oh and did we mention that it's also on track to receive Passiv Haus certification?
Alan Dawson had a dream to provide energy-efficient, low-carbon prefabricated housing that is also affordable.
With significant support from his local council and a variety of materials and construction experts, he finally completed the first eco-friendly Adaptahaus for £300,000. Although these days you can build a decent house for less, this is a fairly reasonable cost in the UK that will probably be reduced as demand increases. The recipient of the Best Technical Innovation award from LABC, the Adaptahaus in West Cumbria is clad in sustainably-sourced Larch and Green Oak timber, and has superior insulation. This home’s energy consumption and overall carbon footprint are so low that it achieved level 4 from the Code for Sustainable Homes.
